How integrating evidence-based handwriting practice into existing programs, not only benefits literacy development but overall student learning

Avoid

The implications of NOT explicitly teaching automated handwriting and the associated risks for a child's confidence and well-being

Boost literacy & numeracy rates through handwriting!

Literacy & numeracy rates are in decline in many countries around the would. Could it be causal or correlational that these statistics seem to coincide with the decline in explicit handwriting instruction and practice to proficiency in many modern curriculums?

Research indicates that developing automated handwriting (ie. correctly forming each letter by memory without copying, tracing nor hesitation) decreases the cognitive load or ‘frees’ up the brain to more easily follow instructions and tend to letter sizing, spacing, grammar, punctuation and spelling etc whilst composing and/or editing.

How does handwriting improve reading & spelling?

Writing letters helps embed or store letter knowledge within the brain for the retrieval process required during reading and spelling, (ie. memories of the letter form,/shape, sound and name) hence it can help improve reading fluency and spelling competency.

Hi, I'm Melissa and I am a Paediatric Occupational Therapist.

My particular interest in offering handwriting trainings stems from working with children for the past 18+ years who are struggling in this area and I have had the joy of applying research to my clinical practice with these children and evidencing improved outcomes.

I am passionate to share of this evidence-based practice with you, so you can see, how simply developing automated handwriting, can truly help improve your students' literacy abilities and overall capacity for learning.

My 20+yrs experience as a Paediatric Occupational Therapist includes:

  • working as a clinician with hundreds of children across varying ages and diagnosis
  • speaking and training by invitation, both locally and internationally, online & in-person, to parents, students, educators/teachers, librarians and therapists

It sounds cliche, but in all sincerity it is my passion to see children blossom and families, educators/teachers and therapists empowered and equipped!

On behalf of your students and their future potential can you afford not to? Truly too much is at stake, to not give your students the opportunity to improve their handwriting, not only for the sake of their written communication skills per say, but for the role handwriting plays in the development of their overall literacy skills and in optimizing their learning!

This webinar is being conducted at 3 different times, so once you book your ticket, you will receive an email with the Zoom links and you can attend whichever time best suits you.
